Block Designs

Probably the most identifiable feature of a native-style flute is the block piece that sits on top of the flute. It is a vital part of the sound-producing mechanism of the instrument.   Interestingly enough is its exact duplication of the way pipe organs work. Once the piece has performed its function, it can take many decorative forms.  On my flutes the block is a mini-sculpted fetish.  Birds, animals and other creatures as well as designs evocative of the wind, water, and other elements of the natural and mythological worlds are used to connect the player and the music.
